Atlanta-based duo Andrea & Mud draw upon genre stalwart Junior Brown, who coined the “surf-western” term, into their own special mix, tossing in heartier blues stock. Their songwriting is potent, and with their new album, Bad News Darlin’, they extract parts of themselves to cope, mend, observe, and grow.
Consummate storytellers, Andrea Colburn and Kyle “Mud” Moseley bury their instruments and melodies in the earth’s dusty shell. Each song is soaked in style, immersive and heightened like a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack.
“Our friend, Glen Bennett, approached us a while ago about doing a video for ‘Used Car Salesman,’ Moseley says. “We had been playing it live and he loved the song. Glen used to produce major music videos for MTV (back when they still played music videos). He’s directed big hard rock videos for major bands. He had us go to a classic car showroom to shoot the narrative part of the video and Old Car City in White, Ga., to shoot the performance part. Both places were so good to us. Gateway Classic Cars in Alpharetta, Ga., has a gorgeous showroom of old—and very well taken care of —cars. We got to shoot in there and drool over all of the cars for hours. It was heaven.
“Andrea’s favorite was a shiny black ’72 El Dorado, which becomes her object of affection in the video, while she is the object of my affection. It’s still for sale so we hope we can go back and buy it soon! Old Car City is a wild place, as you’ll see in the video. The owner (and Mayor!) of Old Car City is Dean Lewis. He’s got over 34 acres of thousands of cars on his property. What a treasure that place is. So glad we shot our video there because it fit our style perfectly.”
