Feb. 10 marks the 50th anniversary of Carole King’s legendary Tapestry album. Austin, Texas, trio Nobody’s Girl have included their beautiful version of the track “So Far Away” on its self-titled July 2021 album. The piano used for recording this cover version was used for both the Tapestry sessions as well as Joni Mitchell’s Blue album. The video expresses memories and the longing of not being with loved ones.
Band member BettySoo says, “From the first time the three of us toured the Studios at Fischer, it blew us away to learn about the recording history of so much of their equipment, but the jewel in the crown for us was the piano from Joni Mitchell’s Blue and Carole King’s Tapestry. It felt like the instrument tethered us in a physical way to two of the most influential albums of our lives.”
Band member Rebecca Loebe adds, “As a writer, [Carole King] inspired me more than perhaps anyone else to work extra hard to connect the music I’m writing to the lyrics and stories I’m sharing. She is a master at the craft, and I feel lucky to be able to enjoy her music. Recording a song from one of my favorite albums on the exact piano used in the original recording is a humbling experience that I never expected to have.”
And then bandmate Grace Pettis sums up the sentiment of the song by saying, “Most of us have spent the better part of the year keeping our distance from our family and friends. Besides that physical distance, we’ve never been further from each other in terms of our politics and our values. In this divided and lonely year, that feeling, of being ‘so far away’ from the ones we love the most, is seemingly universal. … For a song recorded 50 years ago this spring, it sounds a lot like 2020 to me.”
