SOUL SIDE | Soul Side: From Memphis to Detroit to New Orleans to Chicago, Philadelphia and beyond, Soul music is an essential subgenre in the modern Americana movement that has inspired and influenced generations of songwriters. Soul can be swaggering and slick, sophisticated and sultry, sentimental and sexy, psychedelic, “…and so on and so on and Scooby dooby doo,” as Sly Stone put it. The Soul Side of Americana is a celebration of the gritty, passionate, and downright funky R&B that developed from the African-American consciousness through gospel music, and this visceral video hour is a testament to the timelessness that this genre embodies. Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Chess, Hi Records and more; their legacy lives on The Soul Side.
Nick Black is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable names in the Midsouth music scene. With his smooth soul vocals, soaring falsetto, blazing guitar, and highly entertaining live shows, Black and his band are bringing together the sounds of old and new, and he’s creating something completely differently and entirely original.
His debut album, THE SOUL DIARIES, released in 2012, was an amalgamation of music four years in the making. It garnered critical acclaim within the local and regional soul and blues scenes, as well as airplay on international radio.
Nick released his sophomore album DEEP BLUE in May 2015 to critical acclaim. He put out two music videos for “Ocean” and “Worst You Can Do”, both directed by Destyn Patera. His work on DEEP BLUE bridged the gap between his soul and blues music roots and his songwriting, giving him the push and attention he needed to hit the road and bring his live show to the rest of the country.
Black won the 2016 Blues Music Award for “Band of the Year” for his work with award- winning blues and boogie-woogie band Victor Wainwright & The WildRoots.
He and his band are touring in 2016 in support of DEEP BLUE and their forthcoming untitled album.
